However the majority of reported applications are stand-alone applications which tend to lead to 'islands' of information and knowledge and contribute little to manufacturing integration. Knowledge based systems do in fact have an important role to play in the integration of different functional tasks. This paper develops a framework for the use of knowledge based systems in an integrating role. It discusses the characteristics of different types of manufacturing knowledge and how declarative knowledge stored in different functional databases can in principle be integrated using a global semantic interface which allows individual problem-solving knowledge based systems to operate in a cooperative mode.
