- W2298200909 abstract "The ancient Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible by Symmachus around 200 ce has suffered much from neglect, both in Antiquity and Modernity. As a witness to the reception history of the Hebrew Bible between Early Judaism and Early Christianity this translation is important. Particularly Symmachus’ rendering of the Book of Isaiah, now known to a large extent thanks to the recovery in the previous century of Eusebius of Caesarea’s Commentary on Isaiah, shows a large number of fulfillment interpretations that can be seen as an intermediary stage between the Old Greek of Isaiah (tentatively associated with the Jewish-Egyptian circle around high priest Onias IV at Leontopolis) and the exegesis by Eusebius intended for the Constantine Christianity at Byzantium. This paper explores the possibilities and pitfalls of studying the vocabulary of Symmachus in light of contemporary Greek sources (pagan, Jewish and Christian alike) in order to see if and to what extent the Greek version of Symmachus reflects political events in Palestine in the first centuries ce and political positions propagated by him as well as the Jewish rabbinate under Yehuda ha-Nasi after those catastrophical events. Such elements can be found in Symmachus’ renderings in Is 1: 8 where the siege of Jerusalem (thus all versions except Symmachus) has been rendered in terms of the destruction (πορθέω) of Jerusalem, in Is 6: 13, where the image of twofold (πάλιν) “défloration” or “déforestation” (καταβοσκήσις) of Jerusalem alludes to the Jewish revolts, and in Symmachus’ distinctive use of terms such as ἄνταρσις, “revolt”, ἠρεμία, “tranquility”, and ὑπερμαχεῖν, “(God) doing battle (instead of humans doing so)”. It is also shown that Eusebius of Caesarea, who quoted far more often from Symmachus than all other Greek versions taken together, gave his own anti-Jewish interpretation of Isaiah based on Symmachus’ quietist and realistic political interpretation." @default.
