• W2298331204 abstract "Common urban planning practice is mainly based on socio-economic concerns, aspects of visual aesthetics, safety and mobility. Aspects of noise are usually included in the environmental impact assessment of planning proposals. However, the focus is often on minimizing the adverse impact of noise on future residents, following the completion of a preliminary design. The soundscape approach, which considers environmental sound as a resource, can be most effective when applied at an early stage in the urban planning process. This paper reports on applying the soundscape approach in the planning of the redevelopment of an urban industrial site into an area with dwellings and an urban park. The current situation was characterized using ambulant and long-term sound measurements, and qualitatively evaluated through interviews. In order not to miss important soundmarks, the selection of times and locations for measurements was guided by the outcome of the survey. Soundscape targets were formulated based on input from the new experts: people living in the neighborhood and potential future users of the park, and city planners and architects. Advice to the planning authorities on how to reach these targets was based on noise maps of different building arrangement scenarios, noise measurements and survey results." @default.
