- W2298854419 abstract "Gouveia, Saulo. Triumph of Brazilian Modernism: Metanarrative of and Counter-Narratives. Chapel Hill, N.C.: U of North Carolina P, 2013. 272 pp. ISBN 9781-4696-0999-7 Triumph of Brazilian Modernism is a solid and well-argued scholarly work critical legacy of Brazilian Modernism. guiding purpose of book is to deconstruct metanarrative of rupture and emancipation that became defining trait of Modernist movement according to most of critical reception that followed it. One of principal goals of study is to displace ways critics appropriated legacy of Modernism and produced an overly generalized interpretation of movement, conceiving Modernist intellectuals of 1920s as bastions of rupture and emancipation. Triumph of Brazilian Modernism constitutes itself in opposition to this mythical narrativization of highest impact cultural movement of twentieth century in Brazil, but does not, as author says, oppose legacy and importance of Modernism in Brazilian culture. Instead, book defends idea that type of rupture that Modernist intellectuals (specifically Paulo Prado, Mario de Andrade and Oswald de Andrade) were able to achieve-in aesthetic terms-did not constitute a complete break with atavistic pre-modern forms of political and cultural landscape of Brazilian society. To achieve his goal of displacing triumphalist narrative of Brazilian Modernism, Saulo Gouveia organizes book in two parts: The Metanarrative of Emancipation and Counter Narratives. first part of book discusses legitimization process of Modernism in Brazil and role played by literary historiography in construction of 'tradition of rupture' commonly associated with movement. Gouveia argues that state cultural apparatuses, most importantly institutions of higher education, helped to legitimize metanarrative of emancipation and rupture. interpretations of Modernism produced by Brazilian universities consolidated mainstream perception of movement and were constructed mainly on narratives and concepts taken form modernists' own accounts (38). This legitimation process during 1930 and 40s transformed Modernism into the hallmark of state cultural and educational apparatuses (79). university system in Brazil is born out of these Modernist ideals, and some of its intellectuals assumed important roles within system not only as professors, but as administrators as well. Gouveia argues that institutionalization process of Modernism started to emerge in context of this homogenizing interpretation of its legacy, and as consequence, many of contradictions and various modernist subcurrents were minimized in favor of an ambiguous heroic image for Modernism and most of modernists (79). It was during 1950s that this process of institutionalization was solidified through publication of important literary history volumes. These volumes, argues Gouveia, helped to position metanarrative of Modernism within educational system and constructed mainstream image of movement during twentieth century. Another important aspect of Triumph of Brazilian Modernism is its discussion of modernist intellectuals' appropriation of avant-guard aesthetics of primitivism as part of a nationalistic program that sought to foster an origin myth discourse. This discussion is framed in book through analysis of literary trope of bandeirante. According to Gouveia, this trope embodied nationalistic sentiments, while at same time constituted distinct characteristics of paulista identity. construction of a continuous genealogical narrative with a noble past demonstrates discursive implication of using myth of bandeirismo as an important symbolic element for early modernists. …" @default.
