- W2298916475 abstract "Shakespeare&’s Globe Theatre, situated on the south side of London&’s River Thames, has, since its first productions in 1997, achieved its aim of becoming a popular tourist site in London and a location for experimentation with historical performance. But can a venue that is identified with tourism and with a fraught historicity lend itself to heterotopic analysis and to alternate orderings that are relevant for a contemporary London? I believe it can. The previous chapter&’s exploration of the National Theatre of Scotland surveyed productions that capitalized on performing in multiple locations, the absence of a fixed venue, and even absence itself. In this chapter, I address in the Globe a single venue laden with historical significance. The tremendous weight of‘history’ associated with this venue can overpower performances: early modern‘time’ combines with recreated Renaissance ‘space’, threatening to preclude other spatial or temporal possibilities. Yet not all Globe productions perform an unrefracted historical focus: I illuminate the potential for heterotopia at Shakespeare&’s Globe by analysing productions that shift historical exclusivity and facilitate a connection with communities beyond the venue. I argue that if it is possible to convey contemporary spatial and temporal significance through and around the historicity of the Globe, then it should also be possible for theatres that are not so heavily identified with a particular figure or moment in history to support heterotopic revisions of spatiality that actively intersect with their communities." @default.
