- W2299081213 abstract "The Catherine Point region in Perth, Western Australia, has a long history of human influence, including groyne construction, dredging and sand nourishment. Variable onshore feed from Success Bank is understood to play an important role in the sediment budget. In recent years sections of shoreline adjacent to the Catherine Point groyne have been eroding, resulting in reduced beach and dune widths and threatening coastal infrastructure. GENESIS-T, a numerical shoreline evolution model, was used to investigate the likely impact of changes to the Catherine Point groyne and onshore feed on the local coastal processes. The variable nature of the onshore feed and seasonal sediment fluxes make calibration of a shoreline model difficult. The onshore feed is believed to be annually and seasonally variable, with the volume and break-up (north and south of Catherine Point groyne) somewhat unknown. It would require an expensive measurement programme over many years to understand the potential onshore feed in the area. This was outside the scope of this local government project, with a limited budget and an urgent timeframe. Even with additional accurate survey data and measurements it could still be difficult to determine the true break-up of the onshore feed. The highly modified coastline also includes a number of groynes, seawalls and breakwaters, adding to the complexity of the shoreline modelling. This study highlights that a clear understanding of the local coastal processes, including onshore feeds, is critical when modelling shoreline evolution. Calibration of the model involved matching model output to known sediment fluxes, while acknowledging that a number of inputs such as the onshore feeds were approximated. Using output from the 2GWAVE wave model, the GENESIS-T model was used to determine the sensitivity of the coastline to changes in onshore feed and changes to the Catherine Point groyne. All future cases were compared to a base case to estimate relative impacts to the shoreline. Results suggest that a 30m extension of Catherine Point groyne may halt the erosion to the north. However, this extension may exacerbate the existing erosion trend to the south, requiring identification of key development areas to minimise impacts." @default.
