- W2299101174 abstract "This chapter explores a paradox in the development of international legal theory at the height of the Cold War in the USSR and in its aftermath. It commences with an overview of the indeterminacy critique of international law articulated by 'Newstream' international law scholars. Next, the chapter analyzes the development of the doctrine of peaceful coexistence and illustrates how Soviet theorists sought to formalize an indeterminate set of concepts concerning coexistence while preserving dueling and competing interpretations of coexistence for maximum policymaking advantage. It suggests a number of avenues for further research on the nature and function of Soviet and post-Soviet approaches to international law. Finally, the chapter theorizes that the contemporary Russian fascination with natural law and positivist traditions in Russian international law, in fact, is a retreat from allegations of Soviet-style duplicity in the use of international legal norms.
