- W2299152912 abstract "Roadway grade has important impacts on fuel consumption, but quantifying these effects requires the collection of real-world roadway elevation information. Traditional field measuring work is costly and time-consuming, and the grade measurements are limited to the studied routes. In this paper, the authors overcome these limitations by extracting a high-resolution elevation data set through the Google Earth Application Platform Interface. In particular, elevation points at 10-ft intervals were collected for the entire United States Interstate Highway System. The processed elevation data accurately depicts the elevation curves and produces roadway grade information with high resolution. With the detailed grade data, the comprehensive modal emission model (CMEM) was applied to analyze the energy consumption on interstates. The study modeled a typical light-duty passenger car under free-flow traffic condition. Two types of energy loss, braking energy loss and idling energy loss, were specifically calculated and analyzed to look at possible improvements from energy saving techniques. Results show that on the interstate segment level, change in roadway grade resulted in dramatic variations in energy consumption, while energy losses at downgrade segments can be potentially recycled. Aggregated statistics at the interstate level reveals that high energy consumption and energy loss correspond to regions with large grade variations, which may represent mountainous areas. The two types of energy losses represented less than 5% of the total energy consumption rate." @default.
