- W2300195655 abstract "WHY THE WEST IS PUNISHING MACEDONIA. (By Sergei Markov, member of the Russian Public Chamber and political analyst. Izvestia, May 20, 2015, p. 6. Complete text:) Mass demonstrations in Macedonia are happening according to a classic color revolution scenario: They have already been dubbed the Macedonian Independence Square. The Western-backed opposition is leveling tried-and-true accusations of corruption and lack of democracy at the current authorities. ... An opposition camp has been set up in the center of the capital, and US Ambassador to Macedonia Jess Bailey supported the demonstrators' right to block central streets. European Parliament deputies are taking part in the demonstrations, while the Western media are also supporting the protesters by accusing the country's leadership of dictatorial practices. Just as with Georgia in 2003, the protest movement is spearheaded by the Soros Foundation - not the US State Department and the CIA, as was the case with Ukraine. ... The West is pursuing geopolitical objectives in this conflict. ... The first of these is to derail the construction of [Russia's] Turkish Stream [natural gas pipeline], which was slated to supply gas to Central and Southern Europe via Turkish, Greek, Macedonian and Serbian territory. The US is interested in derailing the Turkish Stream so that Europe gets its gas from Qatar. That way, [the US] will be able to keep its hand on the shutoff valve and could use it in its own political interests. ... A second global project under threat is the New Silk Road initiated by China. The final stage of this project is the construction of a railway segment linking Greece's port of Piraeus with Macedonia, Serbia and Hungary. ... The third objective is to spook Greece's left-wing and Hungary's right-wing governments so they don't veto any decisions to prolong sanctions against Russia. Otherwise, they may get a color revolution. ... Fourth, the West is attempting to make an example of a country that is not participating in anti-Russian sanctions. ... A quarter of Macedonia's population is Albanian. Actually, that is one of the country's distinguishing features - a strong Albanian factor. Many Albanian leaders are promoting the concept of a greater Albania, which would be comprised of Albania, Kosovo, and parts of Serbia, Macedonia and Greece. ... Thus, the possibility of a new European war between Slavs and Albanians is starting to look like a real threat. It is known that Albanian armed groups have close ties to Al Qaeda, the Islamic State [aka ISIS] and drug traffickers. ... In 2001, clashes erupted between the Macedonian Army and Albanian armed groups, resulting in the Ohrid Agreement, which was signed under pressure from the global community. Under this agreement, the Albanians got incredibly broad autonomy - the sort that Ukraine's Russian-speaking regions don't even dare to dream about. Now, the Albanians are refusing to make any concessions and, it seems, are refusing to resolve political differences via peaceful means: The Albanian terrorist attack on Macedonian police is proof of that. ... So now, in addition to derailing the Russian and Chinese projects, Europe is faced with a real threat of an interreligious conflict. The war between Albanian Muslims and Orthodox Slavs could be similar to the confrontation between Shiites and Sunnis in the Middle East, which has engulfed several countries in the region. ... In many ways, the crisis was provoked by opposition leader Zoran Zaev, who accused [Macedonian] Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski of wiretapping 20,000 Macedonian citizens. Many believe that the small republic's security services lack the capability to simultaneously tap 20,000 people's phones. ... The source who leaked the incident is former security services head Zoran Verusevski, who worked closely with NATO security services. That is why government supporters believe that Macedonians were wiretapped not by local security services, but by NATO intelligence - namely, Germany's BND [Federal Intelligence Service] working on assignment from the [US] National Security Agency - who passed the information to the Macedonian opposition. ... Generally, a German trail is visible in the Macedonian affair. The German press is accusing the Macedonian government of conspiring with terrorists: They allegedly attacked a police precinct on the government's orders. Readers are reminded that the collapse of Yugoslavia started when Germany was suddenly the first to recognize [the independence of] Slovenia and Croatia. Germany has been attempting to make inroads into the Balkans for decades - both under the Kaiser and during the Third Reich. Perhaps we are witnessing another Balkan breach attempt by Germany. ... In response to the attempted color coup, government supporters held the biggest rally in the history of Macedonia. Incidentally, slogans in support of Russia and Orthodox Christianity were heard at that rally." @default.
