- W2300926847 abstract "Vertically aligned anataseand rutile-phase TiO2 nanocrystals (NCs) have been grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) on sapphire (SA)(100) substrates under different conditions, using titanium (IV) i-propoxide (Ti[OCH(CH3)2]4) as source reagent. During the initial stage of NCs deposition, TiO2 nuclei were form as a consequence of preferential nucleation sites on the substrate and the NCs’ orientations was determined by the substrate structure and deposition conditions. The surface morphology and structural properties of the as-deposited NCs were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Raman spectroscopy was used for the phase determination. Figures 1 and 2 show the FESEM images, XRD patterns and Raman spectra for the anataseand rutile-TiO2 NCs deposited on SA(100). FESEM micrographs reveal that vertically aligned NCs were grown on SA(100) substrate. The XRD results indicate that the anataseand rutile-TiO2 NCs are oriented, respectively, along (011) and (001) on SA(100). The Raman active modes of A1g, B1g and Eg of the anatase TiO2 are observed and denoted in Fig. 1(c), while in Raman spectrum of rutile-TiO2 NCs (Fig. 2(c)), the Eg and A1g modes, as well as the two-phonon bands at ~ 237 cm (marked as *), are the major features; the B2g mode is the extremely weak and B1g mode is absent. The results suggest that structural orientation and phase determination are induced at the NCs/substrate interface, and are governed by the interfacial energy minimization through minimizing the structural mismatch between the oxide sublattices of the NCs and the substrates. In addition the investigation of the photoluminescence characteristics of the as deposited TiO2 has also been carried out. The luminescence in anatase TiO2 is found to be essentially different from that in rutile TiO2 because of significant structural differences. Fig. 1.
