- W2301470087 abstract "A review of the available literature suggests that iron deficiency and anemia are widespread through the world especially in developing countries. A lack of national data and variations in the methods and criteria used for diagnosis make it difficult however to estimate the exact prevalence of iron deficiency among infants and children in the Third World. The immediate causes of nutritional anemia are an inadequate diet and blood loss caused by parasitism. These 2 factors result from the interaction of underlying factors linked to underdevelopment including low socioeconomic status erroneous feeding practices poor sanitation and inadequate health services. Thus it is imperative that iron deficiency be viewed in the context of the social economic and political environment. The experience in developed countries suggests that active ongoing programs for the control of iron deficiency and anemia have a major impact on reducing the prevalence of these conditions. It is proposed that to get a clearer understanding of worldwide prevalence parameters of iron deficiency should be categorized into those for individual diagnosis and those for community diagnosis. Where prevalence surveys are conducted especially in conjunction with supplementation trials distribution analysis is a useful tool for measuring program impact." @default.
