The EQ concept argues that Intelligence Quotient (IQ), or conventional intelligence, is too narrow and that there are wider areas of emotional intelligence that dictate and enable how successful we are. Psychologists and linguists have also become interested in this type of intelligence to figure out the relationship between EQ and English learning skills and strategies. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether EQ, as an interpersonal skill and innate potential, had any relationship with reading comprehension and structural ability of language learners. To this end, 250 Iranian EFL learners studying at Islamic Azad University (IAU) took a language proficiency test (MELAB, 1997); 170 candidates who were at the intermediate level were selected as the participants of the study and hence took the self-report measure Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i, 1997). Results revealed that except for social responsibility and empathy as interpersonal categories, there was a strong relationship between Emotional Intelligence and EFL learners’ reading comprehension and structural ability." @default.
