- W2302180489 abstract "The responses of aortic strips from spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) to norepinephrine, potassium, barium, angiotensin and ouabain were found to be much less than those of normotensive Wistar and Sprague-Dawley rats. The aortae from young SHR (30-35 days old), which had not yet developed hypertension, also exhibited low contractility to norepinephrine and potassium in comparison to aortae from control normotensive rats of the same age and body weight. The total contractile response of strips from normotensive control rats to norepinephrine or potassium was characterized by a slow component following a fast component; however, in strips from SHRs the slow component was diminished or absent. Removal of Ca++ from the media in the tissue bath resulted in a faster rate of decay of norepinephrine- or potassium-induced contractions in SHR than in normotensive control rats. In normal Ringer9s medium, Mn++, Co++, La+++ (all 0.5 mM) or Sr++ (5 mM) caused contractions only in the aortic strips from SHR (hypertensive and prehypertensive). On the other hand, certain stimulants evoked rhythmic contractions in aortic strips from normotensive rats but not from SHR. The aortic strips from SHR and from control animals showed similar vascular responses to nitroglycerin and papaverine, and there were no differences in stress relaxation. No histopathological changes were observed in the aortic tissues of SHR (3 months and 30 days old). The difference in reactivity between SHR and normotensive rat aortae may be attributed primarily to the initial change in their musculature rather than secondarily through changes resulting from hypertension. Abnormal vascular responses of SHR may be a strain difference unrelated to hypertension." @default.
