- W23032416 abstract "This chapter describes the substances of microbial origin as inhibitors of protein synthesis. Among the antibiotic inhibitors of protein synthesis are major clinical drugs, such as the tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, and other aminoglycosides, and erythromycin. Others have limited practical usefulness, such as actidione or puromycin, and still others are primarily of theoretical interest. An observation that leads to the conclusion that a given antibiotic is a specific inhibitor of protein synthesis is exemplified for chloramphenicol. Addition of this inhibitor to a growing bacterial culture results in cessation of protein synthesis while other synthetic processes, notably the formation of the nucleic acids, continue. Such observation also implies that the generation of energy through electron transfer, its storage through oxidative phosphorylation, and its usage in coupled synthetic reactions are not primarily affected. In the instances in which the formation of cell-wall polymers is not inhibited, continued cell division can be observed under the microscope and can be numerically expressed as an increase in the total number of test bacteria." @default.
