The first study examined lactation changes as observed in themselves by 205 mothers (ages 15-44) who used 6 types of pills. The pills were Orthonovum (2 mg norethisterone .1 mg mestranol) Gynovular (3 mg noresthisterone acetate .05 mg ethinyl estradiol) Lyndiol (2.5 mg lynestrenol .1 mg mestranol) Ovulen (1 mg ethynodiol-diacetate .1 mg mestranol) Previson (2.5 mg norethynodrel .1 mg mestranol) and Volidan (4 mg megestrol-acetate .05 mg ethinyl estradiol). After 3 cycles 24.4% of these women noted a marked decrease in milk supply but by the sixth cycle few more had noted a decrease. The second study divided postpartum patients (ages 20-39 male infants) into a control group using no hormonal preparation a group taking Ovulen and a group taking C-Quens (.08 mg mestranol 2.0 mg chlormadinone acetate). The women continued nursing. Data analyzed was from the 20 women of each group who completed the 16-week study. In the Ovulen group and the C-Quens group the women began to note a decrease in lactation 2 weeks and 4 weeks respectively after the start of medication. Beginning at 12 weeks women in both groups began to stop breast feeding because of lactation failure. The F test showed Ovulen more suppressive at a 5% level of significance. Difference in weekly weight gains of the subsequent 10 weeks from the first 6 weeks (prepill) were 108.8 gm 98.9 gm and 50.6 gm for the Ovulen C-Quens and control groups respectively. No significant effect was noted on the milks composition or specific gravity. It is suggested that lactation suppression is due mainly to the estrogen content." @default.
