• W2304216333 abstract "For years, the significance of strategic management at higher education institutions (HEIs) has been increasing. The present study will seek out indicators demonstrating the potential success of university strategies. For this purpose, the experiences of members from the executive boards of a variety of universities will be compared to theoretical designs of HEIs as an organisation. It is clear that strategic management in HEIs is not a lost cause, but it does not work as suggested in the flow charts and check lists presented in the handbooks. Since such a strategy is dealing with the (always uncertain) future, in order to be convincing, it requires a credibility which it can only obtain through experiences of its own success. A mixture of competent leadership and project management can be used to remedy this contradictory constellation. Die Bedeutung des strategischen Managements an den Hochschulen nimmt seit Jahren zu. In der vorliegenden Studie werden Hinweise darauf gesucht, wie Hochschulstrategien zum Erfolg gefuhrt werden konnen. Dazu werden die Erfahrungen von Mitgliedern verschiedener Hochschulleitungen verglichen mit theoretischen Entwurfen von Hochschulen als Organisation. Offenbar ist strategisches Management an Hochschulen keineswegs aussichtslos, doch es funktioniert nicht nach den Flowcharts und Checklisten, die in den Handbuchern angeboten werden. Da eine Strategie uber die (stets ungewisse) Zukunft spricht, muss sie, um zu uberzeugen, eine Plausibilitat beanspruchen, die sie erst durch ihren eigenen Erfolg erlangen kann.
