- W2305175087 abstract "This study concerns an investigation into air movementand associated energy flows within the environment of asynthetic fibre producing factory. A multiplicity of airconditioningand ventilation systems were operated withinthe factory to provide a suitable atmosphere for the yarn,and also to allow some degree of comfort in hot productionareas. Potential for improved operation of these systemswas anticipated.Initial experiments showed certain anomalies andproblems relating to air conditions and air movement; and animportant facet of the production areas was identified asthe regular partitioning created by the machine layout.A review of previous studies of building air flowsindicated a lack of information relating to industrial andpartitioned areas. Mathematical relationships for air flowswere studied and the interactions of similar, closely spacedpartitions were considered.A series of model scale tests using simple layoutssupported a theory of interaction. The effect wassubstantial for wall type partitions and a considerableoverestimation could result from the simple additiveapproach to determination of resistance.At the factory a computer based monitoring scheme wasdesigned and installed in order to establish environmentalconditions and energy flows. The concept of total thermalefficiency was developed as a means of evaluating theperformance of some of the air-conditioning systems. Considerablevariations were evident between seasons and betweensystems; improvements being possible and recommended.Air flows were also investigated using Nitrous Oxide asa tracer gas. The effect of the internal partitioningcombined with the high degree of ventilation andair-conditioning was to compartmentalize the spaces betweenthe machines in the production areas, semi-isolating eachfrom its neighbours. Thus, the results of the simplifiedmodel scale work could not be applied directly. However theisolation of the spaces offers potential for better systemsoperation by reducing air-conditioning requirements." @default.
