- W2309193051 abstract "Despite WHO's years of advocating appropriate use of antibiotics in children,1WHOPromoting safety of medicines for children. World Health Organization, Geneva2007Google Scholar the situation in China remains difficult. In April, 2015, a boy aged 3 years visited a hospital for abdominal pain that was then diagnosed as colitis. 3 weeks later, he died from organ failure induced by Klebsiella pneumoniae—a superbug resistant to most or all forms of available antibiotics.2Liu J Superbugs caused a young child's death in Hubei and the fatal cases ever appeared in Jiangsu Province.http://cnews.chinadaily.com.cn/2015-04/15/content_20441077.htmDate: 2015Google Scholar China has a high prescription use of antibiotics for both inpatients and outpatients. As a result of antibiotic misuse China has the world's most rapid growth of antibiotic resistance.3Heddini A Cars O Qiang S Tomson G Antibiotic resistance in China—a major future challenge.Lancet. 2009; 373: 30Summary Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (99) Google Scholar Nowadays, inappropriate use of antibiotics in children is a recognised issue4Wang H Wang B Zhao Q et al.Antibiotic body burden of chinese school children: a multisite biomonitoring-based study.Environ Sci Technol. 2015; 49: 5070-5079Crossref PubMed Scopus (97) Google Scholar and increased pressure has generated widespread social concern in China. A shortage of national surveillance systems for infectious diseases in children and weak national policies on antibiotics stewardship are major issues. Although China's Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) has achieved a lot in controlling the use of antibiotics, it is far from being enough. Great efforts are needed to enhance the close collaboration between government health officials and medical institutions, especially in primary health-care institutions, to build a comprehensive administrative network regarding paediatric antibiotic use. The situation of parents who self-medicate is another important issue. Although the purchase of antibiotics from retail pharmacies without a prescription is forbidden by CFDA regulations,5China Food and Drug AdministrationProvisions for supervision of drug distribution.http://eng.sfda.gov.cn/WS03/CL0768/61650.htmlGoogle Scholar nevertheless customers can access antibiotics on the street (in retail shops or at private pharmacies). China should encourage widespread public health education and supervision of the sale of antibiotics in retail pharmacies. Moreover, the high expectations of parents regarding the speed of symptom relief and recovery for their children adds further pressure to doctors. To make treatment quick and effective, doctors might feel pressure to prescribe powerful antibiotics for children when not needed. To improve the use of antibiotics in children, China needs multisector cooperation and long-term efforts. Additionally, joint monitoring initiatives such as establishment of antibiotic resistance and use of databases could substantially restrain inappropriate antibiotic use in children in China.
