- W2309899596 abstract "The species composition of the vegetation of the sand dunes of Ruhuna National Park was studied in an area of about 2 km long and 75-400 m width. Most dunes in the study area were 4-6 m in height and were oriented in NE-SW direction approximately parallel to the beach, the orientation being determined by the direction of the prevailing winds blowing from the sea. A seaward beach terrace, in which the dunes were not present, and a land-ward 'dune-proper' area were clearly demarcated. Only about 15% of the total area was covered by vegetation, the rest being the exposed sand. The vegetation was mainly shrub in the dune-proper area and herbaceous in the beach terrace. The dune-proper area contained scattered vegetation as well as vegetation formed into islands of varying sizes up to about 300 m2. The shrubs and small trees grew to a height of 2-3 m. The shrub vegetation consisted of species commonly found in the adjoining forestscrub area. However, some common species of the forest-scrub and grassland in the vicinity were either missing or represented in a very low frequency in the sand dunes. A total of 124 plant species was recorded in the sand dunes, 21 species in the beach terrace and 120 in the dune-proper area. The scrub islands contained 96 species, while 64 species were found scattered in the dune-proper area. Different species had different distributions along the gradient from the beach scarp to the end of the field of sand dunes. The tree species and most of the shrub species in the sand dunes were of low stature and some were procumbent; a few showed stunted growth. P ioneering species of the dune-proper area appear to be Bauhinia racem osa, Dichrostachys cinerea, Salvadora persica and Schleichera oleosa. The scrub islands may have been formed with one or more of these as core species. The species-area relationship of the scrub islands may be expressed as S = 5.841 A0 225 (r2=0.71), where S, A and r represent respectively the number of species, area of the island and the correlation coefficient." @default.
