Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the digestive tract of unknown etiology, which can affect any segment thereof, from the mouth to the anus. The CD has a chronic, relapsing course, complications such as stenosis or fistulas along its evolution may appear. Currently, there are no curative treatment for this disease, so the therapeutic objective is limited to the control of inflammatory activity to prevent the onset of complications and the patient can enjoy a good quality of life. Steroids, immunosuppressants (thiopurines and methotrexate) and biologic agents (infliximab, adalimumab and vedolizumab) have proven effective in the treatment of CD. However, a significant proportion of patients will be refractory to these treatments or lose response over time, so that ultimately many will undergo surgery. Surgical treatment is not curative in CD, so that in the absence of an effective preventive treatment, relapse is the norm." @default.
