- W2311718472 abstract "Residents of the Santiago city have been affected with the air pollution for more than 30 years. This pollution is mainly composed of primary and secondary particles emitted by mobile sources, where the highest levels of particles are reached during the winter by climatic effects. In this work the spatial component of the air pollution in the city and the short-term effect (medical emergency) were studied based on an indicator that captures the time of exposure to primary and secondary particles for infants under 1 year and older up to 65 years. The data were obtained from the Monitoring Environmental Air (Red MACAM) and the Epidemiological Surveillance System for Acute Respiratory Infections of the Health Department ofChile (Programa IRA).We observe through the statistical modeling that the air pollution, mainly particulate matter are heterogeneous distributed over the city. The center and west sector are themost affected sector of the city increasing the time of exposure in the population and the number of cases of emergency for Acute Respiratory Infections, especially for PM2.5.According to the recent researches, the fine particle PM2,5 in Santiago in addition to acid salts have polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with potential biological activity in the respiratory tract and endothelium with the consequent illness and celular activation including mutagenesis. These toxicological features explain our results of short-term effect in children and older since emergency visits for IRAs are very related to viral infections, whose production can be increase after of a harm exposure, generating more susceptibility to respiratory viral infection in more vulnerable individuals. This thesis sets a new way of understanding exposure to the particulate matter and its impact on big cities. We create an indicator that considers the duration of episodes of contamination that is related to the concept of population doses. This finding may be promising, particularlyin the sanitary control of the air pollution as well as in quantitative surveys for the public health." @default.
