- W2312232082 abstract "The landforms originated by earth slides can be recognized in many places on Higashiyama Hill located at the northern part of Kakioka Basin, and an earth slide actually occurred on the western slope in 1976. The present paper is concerned with the weathering of gabbro, which constitutes the hill body, and with the analysis of clay minerals derived from the rock. Exactly speaking, the mineral composition of the gabbro considerably varies with the location on the hill. Although hornblende gabbro is predominent, spinel-bearing hyperthene gabbro and anorthosite are also observed with lower frequency. The gabbro body seems to be surrounded by biotite granite, from several boring data, at the foot of hill slope; however their contacts have not been observed on the surface. Some researchers have suggested that the slip plane of the earth slide in 1976 might be the contact plane between the weathered gabbro debris and the arkose materials, i. e., weathered products of the surrounding granite body. The observations under a polarizing microscope and the analysis of X-ray powder diffraction of fresh rocks and weathered debris revealed the weathering processes of gabbro, such as the alterations of common hornblende to chlorite and kaolinite, and of plagioclase to kaolinite, halloysite and stilbite. Chlorite formed here was proved to have the nature of swelling as shown in Fig. 6. The weathering processes of hornblend gabbro and their probable chemical reactions are listed in Fig. 7. The clay minerals collected from the slip plane of the earth slide in 1976 were examined by X-ray diffraction. They were founded to be composed of kaolinite, halloysite and chlorite, almost exactly the same as those identified in the weathered products of gabbro. Therefore the slip plane of this earth slide should be located in the weathered debris of gabbro. The existence of swelling chlorite seems to be a main cause of the earth slide of this hill. This concept is properly compatible with the fact that this earth slide is not active, i. e., the rate of displacement is relatively slow as compared with that of earth slides with the montmorillonite-bearing clay materials." @default.
