- W2312546905 abstract "The Central Highlands of Sri Lanka above 500 metres remained uninhabited until the British captured Kandy, the last stronghold of the Singhalese kingdom. The virgin forests of the mountainous interior were then explored and developed, first for coffee plantations and later for tea production. Tea proved to be the ideal crop and labour was required. Indentured workers from Southern India arrived in great numbers. Two thirds of the export earnings were from tea and this came to be regarded as successful colonial and economic development. However, with the immigrants came disease-malaria and hookworm. The natural water courses, which rise in the mountains, were used for water supplies and sewerage disposal, and were soon contaminated. Economic development led to geomedical problems and the interrelationship needs further study." @default.
