- W2312625979 abstract "We discuss witches' broom formation by the parasitic angiosperm, Arceuthobium spp., and the potential contribution of those brooms to shaping the structure of the coniferous forest communities in which they are found. Arceuthobium causes an eventual decrease in growth and vigor in any individual tree on which it is found. Brooms which result from the infection play an important role in the reproduction of the parasites. The brooms on some host species also appear to destabilize host stands. The brooms increase the mortality rate of the host and the probability of fire in the host stand. The modification of stand structure and function influences many organisms besides the host species. Many species of animals take advantage of the habitat which broomed branches provide, while other species of animals use Arceuthobium, or host tissues associated with infections, as food. We suggest that brooms are of adaptive advantage to the parasite populations and, in some ways, to the host populations as well. Without question, broomed trees represent a unique resource in forested ecosystems." @default.
