- W2312874589 abstract "One does not imagine Thoreau, while sauntering across the environs of Concord, glancing behind him and fancying that a Puritan had, in fact, left the tracks terminating solely at his boots. However, just as Thoreau’s trek becomes, in his essay “Walking,” an act of text, so his essay’s textual gesture evinces a certain Puritan inheritance. When Thoreau, in 1862, writes “I have met with but one or two persons in the course of my life who understood the art of walking,”1 Thoreau the contrarian enacts within his text an isolation from his fellow Concordians. This willful isolation echoes sentiments that inspired Massachusetts’ earliest English settlers 240 years earlier. Robert Cushman, attempting to justify flight from England, writes in 1622 “But we are all in all places strangers and pilgrims … our dwelling is but a wandering, and our abiding but as a fleeting.”2 The impulse behind both sentences is to realize a feeling of righteous separation. Thoreau’s art of walking, we can argue, forwards the theological urgency of the Puritans’ wilderness errand. Both require the rejection of authority and of prior obligation; both require an enhanced sense of the self and of the self’s duty dissevered from the dictates of the wider society. More importantly, both require a textual accompaniment." @default.
