- W2312933150 abstract "With the demands being placed on the development of future space systems, maintenance of those systems must be addressed. Previously, tools for space maintenance have evolved primarily based on whether a man or mechanical device would be performing the task. This has established a dichotomy between the manned extravehicular and the telerobotic activities. This paper addresses the development of a modular power tool that has been designed to accommodate both the manned and telerobotic capabilities for performing a variety of operational tasks. The discussion highlights the various missions from which the modular power tool has evolved, along with a description of the proof-of-concept tool and task hardware developed, and discusses some of the lessons learned resulting from the 1-g and neutral buoyancy evaluations performed during tests conducted at NASAIJSC and McDonnell Douglas facilities. The approach taken in this development effort suggests a rethinking of tool design and its implementation to make maximum use of varying resources available through a common set of hardware. Future hardware designs must capitalize on a common design approach that enables either manned or machine interaction to fulfill the intended mission goals. Through the development of concepts such as the modular power tool commonality and standardization of space maintenance operations and procedures can be realized." @default.
