- W2313014788 abstract "The first occasion on which dumortierite was observed was some time in 1920, in the residue of heavy minerals separated from a specimen of paragneiss from a locality near Newburgh in Aberdeenshire. This was a mere scrap of mineral, but showed in a very marked degree the characteristic pleochroism of dumortierite, which is from a pale straw-colour to an intense blue. The following year the mineral was found in the residues from some small—3 to 4 inch—pegmatite veins occurring in the schists near Colehill Farm, about two miles north of Ellon, also in Aberdeenshire. While some of the fragments of mineral from this locality showed the intense blue of the Newburgh specimen, the majority of them gave from colourless to an intense violet. The mineral in the larger individuals showed a marked tendency to occur in fibrous aggregates, though some of the particles appeared to be quite solid throughout. The group of associated minerals in the pegmatites was found to be an extensive one and embraced monazite, pleochroic andalusite, garnet (pink as well as green), anatase, brookite, tourmaline (brown as well as bluish), apatite (often of slightly greenish tint), and iron ores. Dumortierite has since been found in the Cowhythe Gneiss—probably a detached area of Moine Schists—and in the foliated granite of Bogierow, both near Portsoy, and lastly in a specimen of Cornish granite (? St Austell). In the last it is interesting to find the mineral associated, as in the pegmatite veins, with pleochroic andalusite, tourmaline, and monazite. The" @default.
