- W2313018875 abstract "As discussed in our article (Harris et al. 1993), the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatistica (IBGE) rejects the use of morenalo on the grounds that it is too ambiguous. Telles (1995) repeats argument but pays no heed to our rebuttal. Telles states that since the term morena/o is ambiguous referent to race, its use greatly mystifies racial distinctions in Brazil (1609). Telles does not inform us what criteria he uses to detect mystifications, but it is our contention that the omission of morena/o (and other salient terms such as mulatta) as an allowable emic color-race census category results in a completely distorted and counterfactual view of how Brazilians classify themselves in color-race terms. The fact that morenalo is a highly ambiguous color-race term, used to identify people whose etic appearance varies across the full spectrum of human phenotypes, does not render it invalid, if the cognitive frame employed in the census is an emic one. In an emic frame, the fact that one term is more ambiguous than another cannot be the basis for discarding one or the other. As stated in our article, this ambiguity cannot be eliminated from the Brazilian system of color-race identity without compromising its emic integrity (454). Telles has not grasped the difference between ambiguities and contradictions that result from the imprecision and vagueness of the observing social scientist, and contradictions and ambiguities that are integral components of the cognitive domains of the people whom we study. Telles's defense of the use of pardalo as a substitute for morenalo suffers from the same confusion about emics and etics. Parda/o, he asserts, may not be as salient as morenalo, but at least it has the virtue of always denoting a mixedrace individual throughout Brazil (1610). That is what Telles thinks people mean or thinks they ought to mean when they use the term parda/o. But our data show that the percentages of both brancas and pretas were higher in the pardooption group than in the moreno-option group. This means that for a substantial number of respondents the term parda/o must have been used as synonyms for brancalo or pretalo. Thus we reject Telles's assertion that pardalo always refers to a mixed group. Moreover we object to Telles's cavalier disregard of the need to present evidence for his sweeping assertion." @default.
