- W2313253507 abstract "Since 1976 the Archiv has been published as a yearbook, supervised and edited by Georg Jiger, Alberto Martino and Friedrich Sengle. To date three volumes have appeared,' which seem in many respects representative for the methodological and political situation of West German Germanistik. The title of this publication is obviously wordy, but on the other hand, also carefully formulated. In a subtle way it voices if not a policy, at least a tendency: the term social (Sozialgeschichte) suggests that the editor would like to avoid being associated with a particular methodology, for since the study of Hans Norbert Fiigen (1966), the notion of literary sociology implied here has been associated in the Federal Republic largely with Positivism (while by comparison literary sociology tends to suggest Marxism in America). Neither the Marxists nor those who advocate a hermeneutical approach would apply this term to characterize their own works. The emphasis given in the title to literary history points to the tradition of German Historicism, to which Friedrich Sengle in particular, as senior among the editors, is indebted. The term Archiv, which suggests proximity to the sources, alludes to the heritage of German Wissenschaft with its ideals of thoroughness and comprehensiveness. And finally the attribute international indicates that here a journal has been established which consciously reaches out beyond national borders and counts on the collaborarion of foreign scholars. As yet, this openness has met with limited success. In the field of educational studies the publication has attracted some learned American colleagues (Fritz K. Ringer, Lenore O'Boyle). British and North European Germanistik are not represented as yet, while French contributions appear occasionally. What does the Archiv stress in terms of content? In the three published volumes, sociological interpretations of literary texts are the exception. Substantially represented, on the other hand, are articles (1) on reception theory and history, (2) on audience and publishing history, and (3) on" @default.
