- W2313376435 abstract "Hearts of 14 species of snakes were studied. There is an apparent correlation between the habits of a snake and the muscularity and architecture of its ventricle. Active and aggressive snakes have a compact and muscular type of ventricle; less active and non-aggressive snakes have a loose and less muscular type of ventricle; heavy-bodied and sluggish snakes have a moderately muscular or intermediate type of ventricle. The muscular architecture of the ventricle also shows corresponding differences. * * * A cursory examination of the ventricle of reptiles reveals significant differences in the quality, quantity and organization of the muscular elements, giving each ventricle a character- istic appearance in dissections as well as microscopic sections. This fact and suggestions made some years ago by Professors E. T. B. Francis and G. E. H. Foxon for a detailed study of it prompted the present work. Since the ventricle is the initiator of the arterial circulation of blood, it was anticipated that the muscular architecture of the ventricle might reflect the physiological needs of the reptile and ultimately its living habits. Literature on the muscular architecture of the ventricle mostly pertains to mammalian hearts; a few accounts of the muscular architecture of the reptilian ventricle exist e.g., Benninghoff (1923, 1931, 1933), Kashyap (1960a,b), O'Donoghue (1918), and Shaner (1923, 1924, 1928, 1929). The present review deals with the ophidian ventricle only. Information regarding the habitat and living habits of snakes was obtained from Smith (1943)." @default.
