- W2313377316 abstract "Looking at Golding's first five novels, The Spire can seem the destination, or even the culmination, to which the previous four had led. It appeared satisfyingly to resolve all those paradoxical demands of the Golding imagination: that the fiction be both clear and mysterious, realistic and mythical, 'islanded' yet fully representative, straightforward and complex, fully formed yet open-ended and tentative. It matched form and content with unique boldness, making the building of the spire keep pace at every step with the building of the novel, an 'architecture' seemingly unforced and inevitable. The structure was perfectly reflected in the detail, every height being made to reveal a new depth, the multiple patterning used to defeat rigidity of pattern and make possible a glimpse of mystery beyond. Jocelin's vision moves from clarity to complexity, and then to a simplicity utterly mysterious; at the same time, the novel is the purest instance in Golding of the work of art acutely aware of itself taking up, bringing together, and unifying the paradoxes which the earlier novels had brought out. But was not that also a problem, that this one novel was 'the one-and-all' alone, and ever more would be so? Was there not something stultifying in its very completeness and self-consciousness? It would seem so, from the way the career developed. The Pyramid (once described by Golding as a step back in order to leap better) was not a great success, and there followed a long silence of more than ten years. Then, dramatically, the silence was broken not by one but by two" @default.
