- W2313487600 abstract "In order to assess the feasibility of using superplastic forming (SPF) of aluminum for automotive applications, the post-formed properties of commercial SP 5083 aluminum (5083) were investigated. Potential automotive applications of SPF of Al were identified, and in order to address the projected materials requirements of one particular application, microstructural stability, strength, durability, and corrosion resistance of formed 5083 were studied. Samples of 5083 were cut from demonstration parts that had been superplastically formed at 490 C. Tensile strength, grain size, cavitation, and susceptibility to intergranular corrosion were measured as a function of thickness strain. Results suggest that superplastically formed 5083 parts would exhibit mechanical properties similar to Al parts produced from conventional alloys. However, if a 5083 part is exposed to slightly elevated temperature, it may become highly susceptible to intergranular corrosion." @default.
