- W2313743417 abstract "Political Emotions, by Martha C. Nussbaum, makes an argument for the necessity of emotion in a stable, sustainable liberal society. Her study focuses on how the emotions of love and devotion towards the basic principles of a liberal political culture are essential to ensure the efficacy of those ideals. Nussbaum attempts to reconcile the notions of stability and liberal freedom to discover a middle ground in which the state can encourage benevolent political emotions without abandoning the principles on which the state is based. She believes that societies need the vividness of experience that is found beyond academic philosophy in the richness of arts and religion. Noting the lack of literature about emotions in politics, Political Emotions is a valuable addition to political philosophy. The book offers a unique approach to consider non-traditional sources of philosophy such as music, and scrutinizes specific types of emotions present in society to discover what either nurtures or discourages them. Part I addresses the history of the political philosophy of emotions by looking at variations of public ‘civil religion’; Part II looks at the various goals, resources, and problems an aspiring society may encounter; Part III concludes with a critical examination of positive and negative emotions in society. Nussbaum argues that decent aspiring societies with ‘strong reasons to seek stability and efficacy for their good political principles’ should pursue love and compassion, which can be appropriately extended so that they strengthen the stability of these societies (p. 202). Part I forcefully illuminates this claim." @default.
