- W2313755700 abstract "Early life stress is a risk factor for chronic pain in adulthood, yet little is known about the underlying mechanisms. The purpose of this experiment was to evaluate whether healthy individuals reporting high levels of early life stress would show enhanced spontaneous pain and neurogenic flare responses to topical capsaicin. Capsaicin temporarily induces localized spontaneous pain and neurogenic inflammation by engaging mechanisms involved in neuropathic and inflammatory pain. A total of 2,625 participants were prescreened for their early life stressful events using the Early Trauma Inventory Self-report-short form (ETISR-SF). Median trauma score on the ETISR-SF was 4 and 95th percentile cutoff score was 10. Therefore, we invited people with low (≤ 4) and high (≥10) trauma scores. Among the 49 participants (76% female, Caucasian), 19 were in the high trauma group. Participants’ average age was 18.9 (SD = 1.2), and did not differ between groups. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) revealed a significant overall between group difference in capsaicin-induced spontaneous pain intensity and unpleasantness ratings, and in laser Doppler measures of neurogenic flare area [Wilks’ Λ = .84, F (3, 45) = 2.90, p = .045, partial η2 = .16]. A univariate analysis indicated that the high trauma group reported significantly higher spontaneous pain intensity [M = 31, SD = 23 vs. M = 48, SD = 27; F (1, 47) = 4.84, p = .033), and marginally larger area of neurogenic flare [M = 24, SD = 12 vs. M = 31, SD = 14; F (1, 47) = 3.30, p = .075]. Yet, univariate analysis revealed no significant difference in capsaicin-induced pain unpleasantness between groups (p =.190). Thus, healthy individuals who have experienced early life stressors show enhanced spontaneous pain and neurogenic inflammation, which may increase their vulnerability to chronic pain conditions." @default.
