- W2313882105 abstract "Sometimes primary (or trigger) arcs on space solar arrays transition into sustained arcs, where the solar array powers the arc until a string failure occurs. Up until now, it was believed that the voltage threshold for primary arcs when adjacent cells were under a relative bias with respect to one another was the same as the threshold when all cells were at the same potential. That this might not be the case was intimated in a 1998 paper which showed that under relative bias, trigger arcs occur preferentially on the edges of cells, rather than on the so-called triple points where interconnect, coverglass and plasma meet. A 2015 paper has shown that in order to understand the 1997-2002 string failures on a GEO commercial spacecraft, it must be assumed that the trigger arc threshold on a 100 V array coming out of eclipse can sometimes be less than about 100 volts, and that under laboratory testing in GEO conditions, a 220 V threshold or less is realistic. Here, we give laboratory results showing that the trigger arc threshold on biased strings in LEO may be as low as 70 V (lower than the 160 V string voltage on ISS and the 100 V string voltages on modern space power systems), and that the arc rate is very sensitive to the prior conditions before the differential bias is applied. Thus, it may be possible for spacecraft in LEO and in GEO to undergo sustained arcing under seemingly benign conditions. In conclusion, we give recommendations on the most effective and economical way to prevent sustained discharges over the lifetime of a satellite." @default.
