- W2313886883 abstract "Event Abstract Back to Event Localisation of the components of auditory evoked brain responses simultaneously studied with MEG and EEG M A. Matysiak1, 2*, Norman Zacharias2, Cezary Sieluzycki2, Reinhard Konig2 and Katarzyna J. Blinowska1 1 University of Warsaw, Department of Biomedical Physics, Poland 2 Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology, Germany Aim: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG) differ with respect to their sensitivity to tangentially and radially oriented sources. Therefore, the simultaneous application of both techniques is the most promising approach to tackle the problem of isolating evoked brain responses which are in close spatial and/or temporal proximity, like the auditory N100(m)/P200(m) complex. Methods: We used an acoustic stimulus of 224 pure 1-kHz tones with duration of 500 ms, monaurally presented to the left ear. Simultaneous MEG and EEG acquisition was performed using 248 MEG magnetometers and 29 EEG electrodes. The averaged signals were decomposed by means of the matching-pursuit (MP) adaptive approximation, using Gabor functions to approximate the N100(m) and P200(m) separately. The head was modelled by means of the Boundary Element Method (BEM) for the standardized MNI brain, implemented in fieldtrip. MEG and EEG data were concurrently used in the dipole fitting procedure. Results: In each auditory cortex, the N100(m) was described by one almost tangentially oriented dipole. The corresponding dipoles for the P200(m) were located more frontally, with radial and tangential components of comparable magnitude. The dipole in the right hemisphere was more radially oriented than the dipole in the left hemisphere. Conclusion: Similar results were obtained in an MEG/EEG study by Shahin et al. [1], who analysed integrals over time intervals around 100 ms and 200 ms, which, however, strongly limits the temporal resolution for any of the components. The pre-processing of MEG and EEG data by means of MP is a powerful denoising tool and offers the possibility of properly separating neighbouring components in space, time, and even frequency.
