- W2314055559 abstract "Improving performance in the creation of information technology (IT) systems remains a challenge for designers of information systems. Failures occur despite best efforts. There is a long history of post-mortems of projects with failed expectations. However, there is a limit to what can be learned by just doing post-mortems and post-hoc analyses. There is a need for close examination of concrete instances of possible system development efforts. These should help reduce the occurrences of expectation failure and increase predictive capabilities. A qualitative field study was conducted among members of California's public higher education curricular articulation officers. This study used the instance of curricular articulation as a natural laboratory setting to experiment with applying knowledge gained from various sources in the construction of systematic process of evaluation to determine design requirements. The analytical concepts of closed/open systems, social worlds, and boundary objects were applied to data derived from the field study. The presence of multiple differential boundary objects was an unexpected outcome of this analysis. This inability to apply boundary objects analysis systematically suggests that the ambiguities in curricular articulation run deeper than might have been anticipated, and that there is (at least at present) no reasonable expectation of applying traditional IT design approaches to curricular articulation. Curricular articulation may be an instance of a class of work domains that are less amenable to a monolithic centralized information systems application. The study presents a grounded prediction that could inform any assessment for applying IT to curricular articulation. The mechanisms of this prediction can be codified and refined and applied in other system analysis and requirements analysis situations, with the expectation of improved decision making on whether and how to proceed with IT application." @default.
