- W2314088553 abstract "This interesting and diverse collection of twelve essays with an editorial introduction, brought together as a tribute to Professor M. A. (‘Sandy’) Stewart, draws attention to people and issues that have been largely neglected in studies of philosophy and religion in the British Isles during the so-called ‘long eighteenth century’ (p. 1). The first essay, by Giovanni Tarantino, considers the content and influence of Martin Clifford’s Treatise of Humane Reason, published in 1674. In this short work Clifford maintains that God gave reason to human beings so that ‘they might recognize … and worship Him’ (p. 15). From this he argues that people should establish the proper grounds and content of their beliefs for themselves, not allowing their independence to be ruled by supposed authorities, whether they be ‘Scripture, Spirit, Church … or anything else’ (p. 16). Tarantino then indicates how this work, which anticipated ideas presented by Locke in his Essay concerning Human Understanding, gave rise to debates both in England and on the Continent. In the following essay Isabel Rivers outlines ‘the fortunes’ of Henry Scougal’s The Life of God in the Soul of Man from its completion in 1676 to around 1830. She shows how in that time his ideas were adopted and adapted by Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Methodist, and Unitarian editors in Britain and America to support their different positions and to combat what they judged to be false understandings of religion." @default.
