- W231410801 abstract "This chapter focuses on developing infrared (IR) absorption tomography as a sensor for the closed-loop control of combustion and propulsion systems. The IR absorption tomography is applied to study mixing in forced-jet actuators. The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis is used to investigate the large-scale structures in reacting jet flows and the potential for the reduced-order models of jet actuators. The IR absorption tomography requires the measurement of the attenuation of radiation along multiple line-of-sights (LOSs) in a common plane. The data obtained are used to reconstruct the spatial distribution in the measurement plane of the radiation-absorbing chemical species, for example, CO 2 , CO, and NO. The aspects of performance of a plane, such as efficiency, signature, and pollutant emissions, depend in whole or in part on mixing processes. These processes depend on the flow configuration and large-scale flow structures, macromixing, molecular transport, and micromixing. Tomography provides data on the state of macromixing. For practical reasons, the number of LOS measurements is finite and the tomographic reconstruction problem is ill-posed. Two reconstruction methods have been developed for cases where optical access is restricted and the number of measurement LOSs is limited. One method is adaptive finite domain direct inversion (FDDI) and the other method is tomographic reconstruction via a Karhunen–Loeve basis. The latter method has potential for use in sensing for the feedback control of combustion systems, where optical access is limited." @default.
