- W2314137246 abstract "This chapter discusses the species specificities and biogenesis of gonadal steroids. In general, steroid hormones are synthesized from cholesterol by gonads as well as adrenals of a variety of mammalian vertebrates by side-chain cleaving enzyme system, which involves cytochrome P-450, and other electron transfer system from NADPH, through two hydroxylations at the different positions of the side chain and then cleavage between C-20 and C-22. Several kinds of microbes can convert cholesterol and other sterols into the steroids that are to be employed as the sources of steroid hormones. These kinds of microbes convert these sterols as carbon source for nutritional purpose but not for the purpose of production of steroid hormones. Pregnenolone, the direct product of cholesterol side-chain cleavage, has the two major pathways for the production of the steroid hormones; first, Δ4-pathway through Δ4-3-оxо-steroid intermediates and, second, Δ5-3β-hydroxysteroid intermediates. Progesterone is known as one of ovarian hormones for the maintenance of pregnancy and also as an intermediate for the formation of C-19 steroids (androgens) and C-18 steroids (estrogens)." @default.
