- W2314184503 abstract "“I’ve had hypokalemia twice,” says Jeanne Callahan, 75, of Seekonk, Massachusetts. The first time was a bit of a blur: she remembers going to the hospital, her pulse racing above 200 beats per minute, and then being discharged after treatment. The second time was more memorable. In early 2004 Callahan had been caring for her 78-year-old husband, who has diabetes. He was in and out of the hospital, and she was exhausted and had lost 30 lbs. “I was so worried about him, going back and forth to the hospital, I would have just a little something. I wasn’t eating right,” she says. Her sleep also suffered. Like so many caregivers, she neglected her own health to care for the one she loves. “I was in the garden one day and I remember bending over and feeling dizzy,” she says. “I don’t remember feeling a headache, but I felt dizzy.” Later that afternoon, she felt nauseated and dehydrated and had forceful diarrhea, all symptoms of hypokalemia. She knew something was wrong.FIGUREThe gastrointestinal system is the most common route of potassium loss, usually through diarrhea or vomiting. Acute treatment includes IV potassium; treatment for a chronically low potassium level can include oral potassium supplementation, available in liquid, powder, and tablet forms. Although hypokalemia caused by a lack of dietary potassium is rare, foods such as bananas, cantaloupes, orange juice, and potatoes are good sources for those who need it. For Callahan, the first step was calling an ambulance for assistance. “I was dehydrated, so [the emergency medical technicians] gave me an IV,” she says. “When I was in the hospital they gave me potassium in an IV. They kept me overnight.” She was monitored and her potassium level was checked through blood testing. Her potassium level rose, and she was able to return home the next afternoon. “I try not to do too much now,” she says. Callahan remains her husband’s primary caregiver, but she has learned that it’s just as important to care for herself as well." @default.
