La photodimérisation du naphtacène pourrait mettre en jeun ou deux excimères intermédiaires mais leur fluorescence n'a pas été détectée en solution fluide The photoreactivity of naphthacene in degassed fluid solution was re-examined. Besides a photo-product, insoluble in organic solvents, which was identified by X-ray analysis as the centrosymmetrical dinaphthacene 2, a second, more soluble, photoproduct was formed, which was characterized as the planosymmetrical dinaphthacene 3 by spectroscopy and chemical information. Indeed, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthacene 4 leads, by UV irradiation, to two photodimers 5 (centrosymmetrical) and 6 (planosymmetrical) which were dehydrogenated with dicyanodichlorobenzoquinone (DDQ) into the dinaphthacenes 2 and 3 respectively. The photodimerization of naphthacene might involve the intermediacy of one or two excimers, but their fluorescence has not been detected so far in fluid solution." @default.
