- W2314275767 abstract "This expedition spent three months in the seas north and east of North-East Land and between that island and Franz Josef Land. The exigencies of Arctic navigation in general, and damage which deprived the ship of its propeller in particular, rendered landings difficult or impracticable and a prolonged period ashore impossible. Geological work was therefore somewhat desultory in character. The observations made fall into three groups: 1. The granite-gneiss complex of the North Cape, North-East Land. 2. The islands between North-East Land and Franz Josef Land. 3. Franz Josef Land. Previous work is most conveniently mentioned in connection with the appropriate subjects. North-East Land. The chief account of the geology of the region is that by K. S. Sandford,1 which also gives a comprehensive bibliography. The writer paid a short visit to the east coast of Chermside Island, the island which bears the North Cape of North-East Land. The rocks of this were at first noted as belonging to the Urgebirge, which has been regarded as the fundamental granite-gneiss complex of Spitzbergen and referred to as Archæan. The question of the age of this formation and its relations to the Hecla Hook formation has received fresh attention at the hands of the Oxford University expeditions of 1921-23.2 In the limited time at his disposal the writer was not able to obtain any facts bearing on this, but has noted the occurrence of the following rock types. The country rock is a medium and even-grained two-mica granite, grey in colour and often showing hints" @default.
