- W2314281520 abstract "This fascinating work challenges the long-held assumption that the Cold War aided the civil rights movement and led American presidents to support civil rights as a means of undercutting Soviet propaganda. In a series of six well-written and insightful essays, the contributors instead assert that the struggle against communism undermined the movement's radicalism, narrowed its focus, and cost it allies. The essays clearly demonstrate that the fears of the Cold War era led most civil rights groups to drop their demands for economic equality, which many Americans had come to equate with communism, and instead focus on more fundamental calls for social equality and the end of segregation. Similarly, these authors note that the Cold War led most civil rights groups to abandon their previous internationalism for a more rigorous domestic focus. At the same time, civil rights groups dropped many of their traditional associations with “liberals, labor unions, and other minority groups” and silenced or dissociated themselves from more radical members out of a fear of being labeled communist by such associations (p. xv). The Cold War thus destroyed the hope of “building a strong broad-based movement that tied together issues of economic justice, racial equality, and peace” (p. 7)." @default.
