- W2314340480 abstract "This paper deals with research activities performed by the authors in the frame of a Crew Return Vehicle development, for the support service to the International Space Station. A possible Earth-entry scenario with the corresponding loading environment for a proposed reentry vehicle is reported and analyzed. Real gas effects experienced by the vehicle along the atmospheric descent, as well as the catalytic effects on its heat shield have been taken into account. To this end, several CFD analyses have been done in correspondence of reentry peak heating conditions, by considering an Apollo–like reentry vehicle, with the air modelled as a nonequilibrium reacting gas mixture and the use of the Navier-Stokes equations. The effects of chemical and thermal nonequilibrium on the vehicle heat shield is pointed out, by considering alternatively its surface as a non catalytic, partially catalytic and fully catalytic wall; then the role played by surface catalyticity on the heat shield thermal loading is highlighted." @default.
