- W2314406543 abstract "The rotifer-capturing fungus Zoophagus has been assigned to the Pythiaceae (Oomycetes) because the rare descriptions of zoospore discharge resemble those for Pythium. For most isolates of this genus, however, zoospore production has not been observed. More consistently, they reproduce asexually with fusiform spores sometimes called gemmae but which resemble conidia or cylindrical sporangiola. Thus it is doubtful that this fungus is an oomycete. To clarify the taxonomic affinity of Zoophagus, two isolates of Zoophagus insidians were grown under diverse conditions in an attempt to induce zoospore formation. Alterations of growth conditions did not generate zoospore production but enhanced the proliferation of conidia (= gemmae). Because cytological features aid in distinguishing Oomycetes from non-zoosporic fungi, ultrastructure of conventionally and freeze-substituted prepared materials was examined. Ultrastructure of mitochondrial cristae, storage carbohydates, Golgi equivalents, nuclearassociated organelles and septa was unlike those found in Oomycetes. Based on cellular ultrastructure and mode of asexual reproduction, Zoophagus is a member of the Division Amastigomycota. The genus Zoophagus is reclassified from the family Pythiaceae (Oomycetes) to the family Zoopagaceae (Zygomycetes), a family composed of similar captors of small invertebrates." @default.
