- W2314443606 abstract "Intestinal arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a common cause of chronic intestinal bleeding. However, the clinical spectrum of this disease has not been clarified. Our three cases are presented and 58 cases reported in Japan are reviewed. The patients' ages ranged from one to 82 years (average: 56.7). All except one were over 20 years old. Fifty-five percent of the patients were women and 45% were men. The principal clinical symptom was repeated gastrointestinal bleeding. Many of these patients had been followed for long periods of time before undergoing angiography, which is the most accurate method for diagnosing this disease. The AVM sites were distributed over the entire gastro-intestinal tract, liver and pancreas, with the most common sites being the small intestine (43%) and colon (34%). Lesions in the small intestine were much more common in patients under 60 years old, and right colon lesions were common in those 60 years old or more. The most reliable method of treatment was resection of the lesions; however, endoscopic laser- or electro-coagulation, arterial embolization and sclerotherapy have recently been reported to successful. Although the outcome of this disease was generally good, patients with diffuse and multiple AVMs had a poor prognosis because of uncontrollable bleeding." @default.
