- W2314446768 abstract "Engagement: en-gaj 'ment; agazmi. Whether one is speaking English or French, the written word looks the same and has in both languages similar associations with love and hatred. The term for betrothal and thus for commitment to a shared life, it also denotes the moment of entrance into combat and enlistment into war. For feminist scholars, gender as a topic carries the same ambivalence. Overcoming the limits imposed upon us by what is ascribed to gender differences is our fierce struggle, while at the same time, as our central topic, gender becomes a subject to which we are indeed bound or pledged. The association of the term engagement with commitment, whether marital or martial, gave it particular importance to French existentialists, and one could justifiably consider Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex, which shows the strong influence of existentialist theory, as the first engagement with gender in feminism's second wave. This paper, an assessment of our failures and achievements in feminist thought and practice over the past ten years, looks back briefly to the terms on which de Beauvoir engaged gender more than thirty years ago in order to note the continuing influence of her ideas as well as the ways in which they have been disproved or transformed during the last decade. My point is by no means to tear down de Beauvoir's pioneering work but to show what her tortured questions set in motion. This context established, I will go on to review the strategies with which we, the American intellectual daughters of de Beauvoir, have ourselves engaged the issue of gender difference." @default.
