- W2314447772 abstract "According to European recommendations, external dose rate (ED) in radioiodine treated patients may be estimated from calculated rest activity (RA) in the patient, based on radioiodine uptake measurements or by measuring ED directly. It is assumed that an RA of 600 MBq 131I causes an ED of 30 μSv·h−1 at a distance of 1 m. This implies a ratio ED/RA of 0.05, but theoretically the ratio is 0.07, a difference caused by measurements in air versus those in a scattering medium. We examined 29 patients scheduled for radioiodine treatment of benign goitre (mean size 137 ml, range 32–440), who received 131I orally (mean 1389 MBq, range 241–3700). After 24 h and 96 h, the per cent of iodine uptake was determined, RA calculated, and ED measured. We observed an average ED/RA ratio of 0.09 (95% CI 0.08–0.1) against an expected ratio of 0.05. Consequently, an RA of 600 MBq typically causes an ED of 54 μSv·h−1, and, therefore, dose rates based on radioiodine uptake measurements and established assumptions were only about half as high as the directly measured values. Thus, it makes a substantial difference whether radiation precautions for the patient's surroundings are based on calculations made from uptake measurements or on direct measurements." @default.
