The s o l u t i o n u t i l i z e s o f f t h e s h e l f equipment w i t h no mod i f i ca t i o n , o f f t h e s h e l f equipment w i t h vendor mods and Rockwell I n t e r n a t i o n a l in-house b u i l t equipment. Th is t e s t s t a t i o n i s r e p l a c i n g a 1964 computer c o n t r o l 1 ed t e s t s t a t i o n . I n t r o d u c t i o n I n 1975 t h e A i r Force was f a c i n g t h r e e major problems w i t h the t e s t and r e p a i r o f PIGAs and t h e i r subassemblies, t h e Pendulous I n t e g r a t i n g Gyro (PIG) and F loa t , a t Newark A i r Force S t a t i o n (NAFS) . These problems were as f o l l o w s : 1. The Pr imary F a i l u r e modes o f t h e PIGA were i n t h e wheel; and adequate wheel performance t e s t s were n o t be ing performed. 2. The e x i s t i n g PIGA t e s t equipment was becoming o l d and d i f f i c u l t t o ma in ta in . Also, i t had no c a p a b i l i t y t o t e s t f l o a t s . I n a d d i t i o n t o t h e immediate problem, a PIGA t e s t c a p a b i l i t y w i l l have t o be p rov ided i n t o the 1990's. 3. Technical Data r e q u i r e d i n t h e c lean room had t o be p r i n t e d on l i n e n which i s expensive and d i f f i c u l t t o mainta in . The A i r Force determined t h a t i t was n o t f e a s i b l e t o add t h e wheel performance t e s t capab i l i t y t o t h e e x i s t i n g equipment because o f i t s age and c o n d i t i o n . Therefore, t h e bes t s o l u t i o n t o r e s o l v e a l l t h r e e o f these problems was t o deve lop a new genera t ion PIGA t e s t s t a t i o n which c o u l d automate p resen t t e s t s , add f l o a t t e s t and wheel performance t e s t s , w h i l e a l s o p r o v i d i n g a system f o r d i s p l a y i n g and m a i n t a i n i n g t e c h n i c a l data r e q u i r e d i n the c lean room under computer c o n t r o l . The t o t a l c a p a b i l i t y r e q u i r e d by t h e A i r Force f o r t h e new genera t ion PIGA t e s t s t a t i o n was t o t e s t up t o 12 inst ruments s imul taneously and t o p r o v i d e t e c h n i c a l data t o 37 work s t a t i o n s . System Engineer ing Trade Studies The new genera t ion PIGA Test S t a t i o n con f igu ra t i o n was e s t a b l i s h e d through a s e r i e s o f System Engineer ing t r a d e o f f s t u d i e s by t h e A i r Force (Ogden ALC and NAFS), Dynamic Research Corporat ion (DRC), Charles S t a r k Draper Labs (CSDL), and Rockwell I n t e r n a t i o n a l based on cos t , t e c h n i c a l requirements, and u t i l i z a t i o n o f a v a i l a b l e hardware and sof tware.
